New technologies and capabilities are already beginning to turn speculative fiction into reality. ![]() Potential strategic competitors seek to undermine the Alliance’s political and military-strategic objectives by deploying increasingly sophisticated strategies, often through coordinated political, military, economic, and information efforts. Our Alliance has to cope with state and non-state actors that fundamentally oppose, seek to alter or even destroy the rules-based international order and the system of values that NATO was established to protect. The Alliance no longer has any real sanctuaries or ‘rear areas’ that some form of threat, attack or malign activity cannot penetrate. The boundaries between peace and conflict, political and military, strategic and tactical, kinetic and non-kinetic are blurring. ![]() The article’s conclusion is that air power remains fundamental to the British way of war in post-Cold War conflict, as it has since the First World War.The environment NATO faces is fluid, global and complex, and the further to the future one looks, the more uncertain it becomes. The article concludes by contending the intervention in Libya is an example of liberal militarism and continuation of the British way of war. The third section critically analyses the argument deployed before the SDSR that unitary, land-centric conflict would predominate and therefore Britain’s armed forces needed rebalancing. The article then questions the notion that air power has limited utility in counter-insurgency by examining Britain’s use of air power as part of a liberal militarist approach to counter-insurgency. The article starts with a synoptic examination of the utility of air power in what David Edgerton has called liberal militarism, enabling Britain to avoid bloody and expensive land conflict by using economic, technical and industrial superiority. "This article seeks to add to the post-Cold War character of conflict debate by putting air power, its attractiveness to liberal democracies and the subsequent British way of war, in both conventional war and counter-insurgency, into historical context. Finally, the study suggests that a strictly strategic employment maturity, in view of the participation not only of the air force at the strategic level but also of the Land Force at the operational and tactical level in the recent fighting, the capacity of the Army Aviation means to provide the necessary support to the surface troops, thus reinforcing the capabilities of the Ground Force. It is suggested the potential of organizational innovation, influencing the restructuring and the business model of the Land Force. With a qualitative bias, the research method used was the deductive and bibliographical basis, supported by content analysis, proposing a reflection on Air Power, essentially, it seeks to broaden the horizon regarding the propositions of Douhet, Mitchell, Seversky and Warden, demonstrating Army Aviation action at the operational and tactical levels. This is a reflection on the application of Air Power, particularly with the Land Force, addressing its ability to conduct modern combat and guarantee success in war, due to the flexibility of air assets. ![]()

![]() ![]() In this case, the electronics inside the camera will heat up and produce electronic radiation that corrupts the signal coming from the sensor. Noise can occur when you shoot long exposures too. That is because in the dark areas, there is little signal to increase, so you are amplifying just the noise. The base ISO is 100 on most cameras and 200 on Micro Four Thirds.Īdditionally, if you underexpose your image and then try to correct that in processing, you will typically see noise appearing, especially in the shadows. This is why we usually shoot images at our camera’s base ISO it delivers the least noise. Apart from getting in the way of a clean image, more noise means a reduction in the dynamic range of the image. ![]() This is known as the signal-to-noise ratio. We usually want as much signal from the sensor as possible and as little noise. So, instead of an audible hum, the noise presents as speckles on your image. This amplifies the digital signal from your sensor. The same thing happens with your pictures as you turn up the ISO. Turn up your hi-fi to its loudest volume with no music playing, and you should hear a similar humming. So, here's a simplified explanation.ĭo you remember the scene in Back to the Future where Marty McFly plugs his guitar into an enormous amplifier and turns the volume all the way up? As he does, the background hum gets louder. ![]() I am aware that some readers are new to photography and may not know what digital noise is and what causes it. Foreshadowing his ability to turn negatives into positives, Barkley went on to develop a friendship with the girl and her family. The incidents were many, such as the infamous incident during a game against the New Jersey Nets when Barkley, intending to spit on a heckler, accidentally hit a young girl instead. Though Barkley brought vitality, attitude and a host of skills to professional basketball, he was viewed as an oddity coming out of college. Some never thought he’d ever get that far. Of course, serious players are also going to want to make sure the net is regulation size and height so they can get an authentic volleyball experience. In addition, the net needs to be tight and stable so that it does not fall in the middle of a game. As you know, the net can really take a beating when skilled players are spiking the ball, so it needs to be able to absorb the impact without ripping. If you are a serious volleyball player, you will need to get a net that is able to stand up to more aggressive play. Consider the following things to help you decide which net is right for you. ![]() ![]() There are two types of radiant flooring systems on the market, hydronic and electric. ![]() This will be the cheapest time to have a system installed. TIP : If you’re in the process of renovating your home, or are looking to do so in the near future, talk to your contractor about installing a radiant flooring system. If you want temperature controlled rooms – where one room is hotter than another, you’ll need a distribution system which will drive up the cost.Ī basic system, installed, will cost about $6-$8 per square foot, but with so many variables it’s hard to give an exact number. There are mats you can loop them into, or you may have to lay down a wood structure/ If you want to use PEX, you’ll need a fastening system to hold the piping down. Once the concrete is exposed, electric mats can be put down with ease and a thin self-levelling concrete layer, like agilia screed, can be poured on top. Your basement floor will first have to be ripped up to get to the bare concrete. For instance, if you want to put down radiant on your basement floor. It really comes down to access and what’s there already. To have radiant flooring added to your home, labour costs are where you’ll see the majority of the costs. Installing a radiant floor heating system Speak to your electricity provider to see if they offer any breaks. TIP: Some hydro companies offer incentives for installing radiant floors. While an electric system is much cheaper to install, the costs to run are much higher than a natural gas boiler system. Also, because you’ll be maintaining a consistent heat, the monthly cost of heating to you will be reduced from what it would be if you were running a traditional furnace. A smart thermostat can schedule the heat to turn on just before you get home, and can be just warm enough during the day to keep pipes from freezing. Of course, costs will depend on the size of the space you’re heating, cost of electricity or natural gas, how well your home is insulated, and what type of thermostat you use. Also, because the air isn’t being blown around, there is less heat lost to doors and windows. The temperature throughout the room is regulated, as opposed to a furnace that will constantly be turning on and off constantly trying to maintain a certain temperature. Plus, there’s the added benefit that radiant flooring is invisible and quiet.īecause radiant flooring heats up faster and can run at lower temperatures, the operating costs can be significantly lower than traditional heating systems, such as a furnace. With radiant floor heating, you don’t have to worry about the air cooling then warming again, nor do you have to worry about allergens being blown around your space. It’s why we have furnace filters, to capture any dust or allergens. A home furnace uses cold air returns, heats the air, and pushes it out through the vents. ![]() Radiant floor heating is also much cleaner. If in concrete, the heat lasts longer because it warms the concrete mass which, once heated, will hold the heat better than air. It’s more efficient than a vent that heats in specific locations. Or you might also see cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing installed beneath your floor in the joist cavities or in concrete (great for basements).Īs the mats or tubes heat up, your room is heated evenly because the mats cover the floor. Either insulated electric wires (typically mats) embedded into concrete or a tiled floor. Radiant flooring typically comes in two forms. Remember the old radiators? Accordion shaped, searing hot, and bulky – sitting just below the window, and taking up much of the wall? Well, imagine one of those spread out and hidden underneath your floor. But what is radiant flooring? And how does it work? Radiant floor heating – the basics ![]() If this describes you, then you might consider having radiant floor heating installed.
